The Best Christmas I Ever Had

Published by polly at 1:30 pm under humor Edit This

We lived in an old house that had holes in the floor almost big enough to see the ground beneath! The wind blew into every crack and crevice, around doorways and windows. I shivered as I got out of my warm bed and ran for the wood stove glowing warmly in our living room. We all gathered around that warmth until we began to move a bit and slowly became warm enough to run get dressed and ready for whatever the day might bring. Today was a special day. It was Christmas!!! I gazed out the window, excited to see snowflakes beginning to fall. Mom and I had strung popcorn and cranberries into garlands that now graced the branches of our little tree. The handmade ornaments and the paper star on top were beautiful to me! Under the tree were presents wrapped ever so neatly in newspaper and paper bags and the bright red ribbon that tied them looked as if it was just waiting to be untied. I knew for sure I had a doll because I had overheard Mom say she made two dresses for it.
As my eyes became accustomed to the brightness of the snow, I saw Dad on the rickety porch, wearing a Santa hat, stomping snow off his boots before he came inside. I was toasty warm by now and magical aromas swirled through the air as my Santa Dad reached inside his coat and pulled out the biggest peppermint stick I had ever seen! Oh, yes that Christmas was long ago, but I relive it often in my dreams. When the cold winds begin to blow, I have only to close my eyes and once again I travel back to that Christmas, the best one I ever had!!
